Kinja'd!!!

Dealer just called me back. They have 2 separate used car lots. My sales guy is on the "budget" lot and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was on the regular used lot. When he called over to the other used lot, the manager there said "so do you know the 4wd low range doesn't engage?" He told me immediately, and I said no thanks.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I was willing to stretch my budget some for a truck that was in perfect shape. But not for one where the transfer case doesn't quite work all the way.

Dang.

Wow, then it shouldn't be listed for how much they are asking for it.

They won't fix it?

They said their service department quoted them a $2100 repair bill to get low range working again so they priced it below market and put the non-working low range on the disclosure sheet for the vehicle.

This is going to be an out there suggestion, but you might want to look at a Hummer H3. They have a full-time AWD with a locking center differential and electronically controlled low-range. And I see them all the time on Craigslist for about the same price as this 4-Runner.

The 5-pot might be a bit under powered (which I don't think it is) and the interior is going to be typical pre-bankruptcy GM, but they have the reliability and off-road ability to be a good winter car. If you can get over being seen in a Hummer.

Wow. You've found two of a hand full of broken 3rd and 4th gen 4Runners.

I most assuredly cannot.

Only problem is while I was haggling over the prices when I bought the '99 4Runner that the dealer ended up buying back from me, I took my Jeep in to CarMax for a trade appraisal. They offered me $1300 less for my trade than this Toyota dealer.

What sort of trade in was Carmax Offering?

At least it wouldn't be the humongous, gas guzzling, ridiculous H2. And if you don't buy it in yellow... I dunno, they have what you're looking for but if the image associated has that much of an effect.

Maybe you can negotiate a decent price including the repair? They're going to have trouble selling it if the first thing the new owner has to do is visit a shop. Also: 1) why wouldn't they fix it and sell it at market? 2) $2100 sounds more like retail, not their cost. Maybe 500-750 more and they give it to you with a working 4WD system and a fresh service.

On the other hand, you might be able to get an independent shop to do the work for $1,100.

I said the interior would be typical "Old-GM" and I wasn't lying. Though it doesn't bother me how plastic it is, I knew it might bother someone.

They sounded pretty firm on wanting to sell it as-is with the non-working low range on the disclosure.

While I can make it work for my budget, that's not without a significant amount of jiggery-pokery, so I'm not really interested in pushing them into repairing it.

Ouch. See if the 'yota dealer can buy your car for the trade in value for the 'hassle' and take it from there.

OK - if that's how they want it. When I bought my '97 SHO, they didn't want to budge on the price. But it had a cloth interior - everyone wanted leather. Two months later I drove by again - car still on the lot. Got very close to the terms I wanted earlier. You don't have to buy anything now, so play the long game.

The interior isn't the only thing that bothers me. Hummers have shit outward visibility, shit interiors, questionable reliability, and you look like some behind-the-times bro who still thinks a Hummer looks cool.

It's not that I'm super picky about this, my current winter car is a 15 year old Grand Cherokee. It's just that I want something decent to replace it and an H3 isn't decent for me.

I can't really do that because I'm about to put my 135is away for the winter, so if I got rid of the Jeep without getting some other winter car, I'd be SOL.

Call me crazy, but have you ever thought of looking at a Lexus GX470? You may be able to find a better deal for virtually the same car but standard leather interior.

I have considered them. I'm conflicted about them, because they're great trucks, but they're also one of the vehicles whose drivers I hate the most. At least around where I live, if you see a GX, it's probably being driven shittily.

But really the kicker for me is they come standard with the rear air suspension that's an option on the similar-year 4Runner Limited. This can go south quickly, and is expensive to fix.
